Audio connector help?

Postby MetroSonus » Tue May 22, 2018 2:29 pm

Hey dudes.. i thought I'd toss this one out to ya..

I've been trying to come up with some sort of father son electronics project and I had the idea for a while to come up with some kind of timer thing for our airsoft games. I don't have the time really to put into arduino and the programming right now.. however, I was talking to someone who made some minor hacks to a cheap kitchen timer and that kind of thing is right up my son's alley.

I want to figure out some kind of bomb defusing type thing. I thought what I could do is hack the circuit traces, battery cables etc. and use RCA or some other kind of audio connector as "plugs" that you have to connect and disconnect to defuse the bomb.

So question.. is there any plug that switches closed when the plug is removed? Like I know we have patch panels that allow you to connect a synth to a effect box, but you can still patch in something on top of that.. like what are those connectors called?

My idea was, the plugs are in and when someone removes the plug, it closes the circuit and triggers the bomb. I'm just trying to think of a way to do this mechanically... I know there's normally closed and open switches and stuff..

I dunno.. am I on the right track? or anyone have any ideas for what I'm trying to do?

I'd say to go with the 1/4 jacks that have normally-closed connections on them. Easy cheese, and it would have the right "look", and don't require that the cables themselves have to carry any meaningful circuit themselves.

An economical choice:

These are panel mount with pcb pins, but you can still solder wires to the pins. I assume you solder?

And these:

OK that's what I needed lol.. normally closed 1/4 trs. I guess it took a genius to figure that one out

no the cables don't have to do anything.. I'd have to experiment, but i could also run them between the start stop button as well to act as a switch. When the right wire is pulled, the closed state would act as a "press" and stop the timer.

Lol who pulls the blue wire?

For extra douche points, use all red wires.
