Starting my own soft synth company

Postby MetroSonus » Thu Nov 18, 2010 5:37 pm

So seeing as how I can't seem to find a VSTi that will give me sounds that i'm satisfied with in terms of pads, drones and atmospheres I've been toying with the idea of making my own with either synth maker or reaktor.

Most of the sounds I tend to hear in softsynths are all percussive based FM timbres for horror / suspense genres. I want nice S+S sounds like on all my ROMplers.

Anyway, I thought up about whipping up some dones, samples and what not and then making up a synth shell in one of those programs, fine some good filter DSP, plug it in.. Of course it'll be open to a variety of sound formats.

I'm not thinking something nutso like alchemy, but something soild and standard like a ROmpler architecture.

4 multi-format oscillators, sampler and VA, amp, filter for each.

LFOs and a joystick for vector control. Filter LFos and maybe arpeggiators or sequencers for each as well.

But anyway, i thought that if I made something cool that I would use, I could also sell it. anyway.. just thinking here..

Metro man Sonus labs may be soon open for business :thu:

It would have to be something special and good sounding nowadays... where are you going to get your samples from? Can't have S+S without them...

This was my thought exactly when I was working on my MIDI controller. If I like it, maybe others would like it, too, and pay me CASH MONIES. :like:

dayum right playa...

so what happened to this contreolleator of yours?

I'd write and record the samples myself.

You know, that it is what I used to do for a living.. it got me through college anyway.

My contreolleator took a tangent into the weeds when I started trying to figure out a way to allow easy customization of the velocity curve. I wound up going down a rabbit hole of cubic splines, which made me realize how much math I had forgotten, which made me study matrix algebra... it got silly.

I also realized that I'd need a second CPU to do the actual keyboard scan. I underestimated the workload needed to do that. Now I know why nearly all keyboard synths have a dedicated keyboard CPU.

Anyway.

So would you write this UberSonus VST from scratch, or what?

pads, drones, evolving atmospheres...

but man if you were there what stories we could tell.

I had a marantz field recorder (I think it's still int he attic or something actually) that I would record all sorts of sounds with. Then I had a roland Xp30 I would write music on then I would feed it all into cubse and halion and process it one way or another.

I had an old Yamaha A4000 sampler too. The thing was pimped out.. HDD SCSI CDROM.. The CDs that came with that were excellent for raw material.

@ puppy, no, i'd user either synth maker or reaktor to build the synth and then search around for some cool filter DSPs

So. How does your software ROMpler do something that you can't do with Omnisphere, for example? It has lots of stuff to use in your oscillators and a very powerful and good-sounding synth engine.
Maybe that's what you need?
I know you have Largo so I'm assuming you're not doing it for the wavetables (but maybe for the lulz )

I'll be honest, I don't know how omnisphere works. But in general i'm disappointed with soft romplers like that because they don't give you much more control over the sound that some ADSR and filter settings.

I'd really like a nice vector based synth with an engine as opposed just augmented sample play back.

But I had an Epiphany in the car on the way home i'd be willing to scrap the project if EP gets back to me on that programming question. :cop:

Omnisphere is supposed to have a very good engine, that's why I said that.

Doesn't the Korg Digital Legacy have a pretty good engine too?

So, programming in C only would seem to be rather limiting to a synth programmer. Try to stretch youself by programming in some other key sigmatures, k?

I'll read into it. Carbon is giving me some tips on absynth.. the wavestation is pretty cool, but most of the samples are tuned percussion.
