akai ax 73

Postby gregwar » Fri Jun 30, 2017 6:16 pm

my friend is gifting me an ax73 that has been siting around in his basement for years. i'm supposed to pick it up from the gym today.

he said it was his dads and he isn't a muso so i would likely have a better use for it

pretty excited. my understanding of these synths from demos and a bit of research is that they are like an aggressive sounding juno with vcos that sound fairly digital (voice on a chip or something).

the editing looks a bit tedious but i'm sure its not that bad. plus i'm excited to try fm with the filter and osc. you can apparently do lfo stuff with those as well...

Sounds like quite a 'rubbery' sounding analog... not bad though. As you say, aggressive little bugger.

I always really liked those. There were a few in the Akai line I really wanted, but it was always the used gear / ebay hassle debacle that kept me from them and a lot of other gear. But congrats man! Stuff like that is always awesome!

Don't forget to replace the thirty year old battery.

here's my nephew ripping on the "electric" patch

https://instagram.com/p/BWrF0tCgL55/

the top and ends feel like plastic and the back feels like metal

i'm going to try to clean the keys, etc really good

so i was reading the manual and the midi spec is really weak! i was hoping to just set up a patch on my notation and map all the cc's, except there aren't any!

from my prelim searches i guess there will be hard core lcd programming. that's too bad because it would be fun to automate a bunch of parameters... oh well it was free

Don't those things trade for like a grand? Turn it into a Deepmind 12 :idk:

Or maybe a Roland SE-02 (for the left hand) and a Minilogue (for the right hand) :)

I really do hate I had to part with my ML to help fund the S8. But I'm not sorry.

No I am not.

S8 is no synth to regret. The awesome level is much too high.

This Akai thing looks sort of interesting, but it'll always have that programming hurtle. maybe you will love it. I hope so. i had never even heard of it before.

Looking around, it goes for around $400-$550 or so. The membrane style programming probably lessens the desirability.

Apparently the AX73 was designed to be hooked up and used with some of the old S series samples (S612, S700, S900, S950, X7000, X3700? Referemce ). Supposedly fiddly but something to keep in mind as I imagine those old Akai samplers are now dirt cheap (if you can find a working one).

I had an Akai AX80 at one point. Lovely display but the sound wasn't for my taste, unfortunately.

i'm curious to play around with it a bit more before considering flipping it lol

i guess due to the cem vcos it has limited midi

its single osc, 6 note poly, but i want to try the dual and unison modes (with detune)

apparently the bass and lead sounds are intense. it's too bad there isn't more hands on control but it can't be as brutal to program as a dx7 lol

It looks like it's not hard to program - just tedious like my DW8000...

from the manual:

i'd say the strings are P00 as well

the synth is a little thin and when i do some unison mode it isn't as fat as i expected. even in dual mode (three notes, 2 osc notes) its not suddenly a lot thicker, at least in my first impressions.

still, its a free gift and some of the weird sounds are pretty good. :jam:

i went through all the programming functions last night and got some decent filter harmonies, nice screeching/breaking up resonance, super detuned/warbly swarms, etc

i think i'm gonna get a 2-tier stand and put mt v-synth gt on top of it.

addendumb

one of the "cool things" this synth does is have sampler input. there's a special cable and you can use a s-series akai sampler as the second vco

while this sounds cool in theory, we've come a long way from scsi and super long sample load times. if it was as easy to program and edit envelopes as my v-synth i'd be more into it.

it works well as a midi controller, so what i can do is just layer it with kontakt patches or any of my other synths like the jp-08. plus if i get a desktop synth like peak, deep mind, etc there's lots of space on the ax73 aircraft carrier to hold it.

looking around it doesn't seem to have a great resale value. i might be able to convince the guys at the canadian guitar centre its really great as a trade-in but otherwise i'll likely keep it for a while.
