Well, I'm in Atlanta, the world capital of hip hop.

SO what mic am I gonna buy.

I'm looking at a Stellar CM-6 right now. A bit sibilant but not too bad. But it's a bit more than I wanted to pay.

Another option is the Oktavamod Hulk 990 (modified MXL 990) that he sells for 379 + shipping so around 400. The Stellar is over 500 with shipping, but it's got a TOOB.

I might have to get an ART preamp along with my FMR compressor, instead of the FMR preamp, for cost reasons...

and studio A guy's answer is "man, there's a hundred something tracks in this thing, they're layered in there somewhere." Of course to me it sounds like simple hip hop which you could do with a 16 track sequencer, but what do I know.

I imagine most slick urban productions do indeed have at least 50 tracks, 100 wouldn't surprise me. Probably 75% of them are vocals and fill nonsense that isn't really needed.

Usually, with hip hop, I'm more impressed by the unofficial mixtapes of the artist when I hear them. Especially if the rap is not stereotypical hip-hop posing, which sadly is quite rare.

One thing I forgot to mention was the monitors. Gear sluts would faint at the horror. HUGE things - plus a subwoofer. Of course, this IS hip hop.

But the slutz would feel better knowing there is room treatment. Even though it didn't seem as pro as the stuff I see at GS... at least the sounds were loud and tight, and hip hop kid seemed pleased (except for the fact that WHERE ARE MY 808 SOUNDS YO).

Well, honestly, that's the truth. I've always thought that subs in mixing were *really* most useful for genres with a lot of low-frequency content. That mostly is electronic dance and hip-hop.

For rock and roll, most bookshelf type monitors can handle your standard low bass guitar notes quite handily, and a BD has enough frequency content to mix it proper on these things that don't quite have full low end accuracy. But without accuracy at the super-low Hz, that ringing 808, yo, with no upper harmonic content, is going to be super tough to mix.

(I'm also guessing that the super-Gearslutty $3000 3 way speakers have less of a need of a sub, but I've never mixed on super-Gearslutty speakers.)

I alway mix with a sub its really important the bass and bass drum are tuned properly and work together, which can be half the battle in any of my mixes

then I check it on the subs in my truck, beats headphones, etc

I just did The Google and didn't realize how bloody expensive those Beats Headphones are.

Managers get confused by my humble AKG K240 at work, they think it's a super expensive noise cancelling Bose or something. They don't know any better.

beats and half of the skull candy headphones are flat as all get out. I don't see how people like them at all. Of course, it's simply a case of form over function here. I don't think anyone that uses them actually cares what they are listening to.

I've got a pair of sony headphones that i will hang on to until the day I die. Sony speakers are really a darkhorse in teh audio world. I used to be a JBL guy, but they too have seemed to opt for a flat response. Sony is rich the whole way through without having that "tuned" feel that get from higher end speakers..

Well what I was talking about was for consumer speakers. Although I do find I mix pretty well on my Sonys. Maybe just because I know those headphones..
