olafur has a 3100 with a midi kit he talks about it around 22-23 min mark. I think the 3100 only has 1 osc per key? those synths are really odd.

I found this video after watching broadchurch on Netflix and he did all the soundtrack for that show

I was going to respond to one of those comments, but Youtube wants me to make Channel to do so. F that.

At any rate, the bassline is definitely descending a scale, but it's a pretty unusual one. It's like an octatonic but the pattern is "doubled up", instead of the usual whole step-half step alternation, you get whole step-whole step half step-half step. I don't think that has an "official name" as far as I know, well it probably does but the Google eludes me....

I realize that there used to be a kid that incessantly posted phish videos and nobody cared, but they really do a lot of different types of music. The song that this is from is part of the type that gets me off. They really are awesome, but usually get the simpler stuff used as examples and that just doesn't work with them.

Any way, I'm glad you guys thought it was interesting

Ahaha yeah I remember that guy.

There were some characters back then. I wonder what a lot of those people are up to these days...

Lots of poopy headed humans are doing bad things lately, so, as a pleasant distraction, please enjoy The Current State of Nerdyeness, listed in bullet point style:

- In the future, self driving cars will decide if I live or die

- I must soon make a decision about 'free' Windows 10

- Chinese space junk streaked across the sky*

- Unless it's a NASA UFO cover up

- Jupiter's Great Red Spot is much hotter than the rest of the planet

- A great book title would be Bob Osmic and the Precarious Craters of Ceres

- There are Pokemons in my haus. My fone showed me them.

- This list is of course merely a sampling

- It is a good time to be a nerd

* Here's a good vid of the space junk. I dunno how to embed a twitter vid:

Windows 10 is fine. I am writing from a computer where it is installed and it is fine. As good as Windows 7 in my opinion :) They fixed all of Sinofsky's shenanigans.

Also, I think you should write that book. Do it.

I have Win 10 on an old laptop. Aside from the fact that there's that one audio driver that just can't be found, I just don't like the look and feel of it. And yes, I quickly 'upgraded' to 8.1. Stupid touch pad foolery, it is.

Fie upon it.

My nerdy pursuit of late is hacking around a few synth projects associated with Will Pirkle's software synthesizer plugin book. Both of his books seem to be pretty good, as far as I know are they are generally considered to be good intro-to-DSP books.

What I like about these is, for someone not honestly willing to deep dive into DSP yet, you can download some full plugins that are nicely layed out and, thanks to its purpose as an education project, relatively easy to understand. In other words -- hackable.

This is the equivalent in the hardware world of a device with built in solder pads and labels I guess.

It's somewhat surprising that the number of actual open source plugins is kind of limited, there's only a few I can Google on either Github or Sourceforge (Dexter, Synister, MDA, and... ???). I like Dexed (and the nearly 100,000 DX7 patches you can get for it) so maybe that will be a good one to hack too sometime if the inspiration comes.
