This gives me a sad.

We were watching Guadians of the Galaxy last night, and of course there's this mystery about who Peter Quill's dad is. So I said to Teh Wief while we're watching it, "If they don't make David Bowie his dad for the next movie, I'll be very disappointed."

Looks like I'm going to be very disappointed. RIP, Thin White Duke.

What was the first Bowie song you ever heard? Mine was "Fame". Friends had a jukebox with that on it, and we played the shit out of it.

I'm happy; hope you're happy too.

Ashes to ashes, fun to funky...

And now Glenn Frey joins the chorus. Man.

Is this the leading edge of "all my favorite rock stars are dying?" Do Not Want.

If your favorite rock band was in that "classic rock era" (late 1960s - mid 1970s), unfortunately. Chances are that it was made up of people who are today between 60 and 70 years old today (eg right about when that mortality rate starts kicking upward, particularly the upper half of that number).

Some folks got the genes though. A few of the original rockers from the 1950s (Jerry Lee Lewis and Wanda Jackson, the later still recording, to give a couple examples) are still alive and kickin'. BB King made it to almost 90.

Jerry Lee Lewis is still touring. I know the guy (Eddie) who is married to his sister Linda (she plays in his band also, by the way). They used to live not too far from my house but last year moved to Texas.
Eddie himself was a promotions guy for Stax and Chess records (Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin, many others).

So yeah they're all still well and kicking around. But I know they also lived a lifestyle that was a bit cleaner than most of the others...

But even some that were not that wild are gone already - like 2/3 of the Bee Gees... and Bowie apparently cleaned up in the 80s. But he kept smoking like a chimney.

A lof of the people who did lots of drugs and drinking probably won't see their 70th birthday. Like, I"m surprised Lemmy Kilmister lived as long as he did.

And then there's, of course, Keith Richards, who will outlast all of them, defying all laws of nature in the process.

Funny, my wife and I were using Richards as an example yesterday, too.

Keith Richard's mother lived until 91. Keith Richard's father lived until 84. Longevity is some sort of mystical unknown combination of genes and lifestyle.

So, lucky for Keith Richards, he probably got played a decent hand in the genetics department. Because his lifestyle seems a bit questionable.
