They do. And vets prescribe them for dogs, cats, and who knows what else. :thu:

This is interesting in that anti-depressants really don't work that well in humans.

(Or rather, they will work very well for certain types of depression, but they don't work well at all for many other kinds. Doctors don't care, they make money either way. )

I'd give it time to make sure it isn't a mild, temporary type of blues due to adjustment stress or something. That's one type of depression SSRIs do not handle very well at all.

Not all antidepressants are SSRIs. There's a whole bunch of different kinds.

Just choose your desired side effect/s and off you go!

Yeah, SNRIs, tricyclics / tetracyclics, MAOIs, "atypical", etc. of course.

But as far as I know, almost *all* of these categories work by preventing the reuptake of neurotransmitters (particularly, but not always, serotonin). I'm not convinced that the lack of neurotransmitter availability is the only cause of depression. Certainly not the mild temporary kind in many cases.

The major exception is MAOIs, which work by preventing neurotransmitter metabolization, not reuptake. But they also have nasty side effects because this also effects the metabolization of other chemicals. I don't think they are prescribed often for this reason.

From what I hear, other mechanisms to treat depression are being worked on, but are not out of the lab yet.

True, Plinky. There's nothing like an Andromeda to lend credence.
