Synth Guitar. Discuss.

So I might pick up a Roland GR-55 this week.
It's got both a guitar modeling amp (their latest COSM thingie) and a 2-part synth based on the latest Juno engine. Which I think sounds good (I've commented on the Juno-Di a while back - I thought it sounded pretty good).
A friend of mine has one and the tracking from the guitar is very good, it's come to a point that it tracks everything you do with the guitar - the bending, the vibrato, the harmonics, etc.
The guy wants to trade my Mesa Boogie DC-3 for it. Which is fair, I think.

I think I might do this.

Yes, it's a guitar processor (not a guitar). But it's also a synth! It's mind-boggling!

I dunno, maaan... Meesa Boggies are mighty sweet amps. But again, I dunno much about it. I mean about gitsynths. Must you have a git with hex pups?

But I've always assumed that if someone plays guitar better than keys but still wants synthy sounds, y not? It's no different than this (from which I still get the big kick).

It comes with the hex pickup, it needs a special one cuz it's teh fastest guitar synth evah. Or something.

One of the cool sides of guitar synthing is that you can mix the guitar and synth sounds.

I looked up some demos. That thing does more than I though it did.

But watch out for the douchewank syndrome:

After reading lotsa reviews, I think I'm gonna end up passing it.

Apparently the presets are pretty cheesy for the most part, and if you want to get good sounds out of it, you have to put a lot of time and effort - especially since they never made a computer editor. And with 3 small kids, time and effort programming through endless menus, is something I don't really have. I'd rather play when I have time.

Also, it seems like my DC-3 might be worth a little bit more than a used GR-55. But it's not in great shape (the main volume button broke off, but that should be a cheap plastic button to replace it. And the back is open, I already got it like that, it was an amp that was gigged a lot).

In the pic: What is the bar from the body to the stock for? Does it have synth controls on it?

Sometimes I think it's the coolest thing, sometimes I think I won't use it's no longer the new toy.

I will have to listen to a demo of it tonight. I meant to do it last night but got busy talking to my upstairs neighbor who has a Camaro and who has also been having issues with people denting his car.

Tonight, I will listen.

It does have MIDI Out, right? So at least you aren't *completely* limited to the cheesy preset sounds.

Alternatively, you could get a Korg MS-20 Mini, which is TEH ANALOG COOLNESS or something. (And, from what I understand, is completely useless at tracking. )
