Lyrics are hard

Postby selfinflikted » Mon Jul 08, 2013 5:08 pm

What are some of the ways you guys go about writing lyrics? This is the hardest part of songwriting for me. Thanks to the help many of you have given me in the past, my music writing and production skills seem to have vastly improved. However, I'm still extremely weak in the lyric department. Any tips or hints for good lyric writing?

Perhaps you just don't have much that you need to say :idk:

I have things I *want* to say, but not necessarily need. I just have trouble converting feelings into words.

I have been on a streak since last week. I've gotten an entire new song written, music-wise.

Melodies? Check.
Guitar solos? Check.
Bass lines? Check.
Lyrics? WTF R THOSE?!

Its like the meter and what I want to express lyrically are clashing. I'm always too wordy, though. I have to work on getting a point across with fewer words.

Meh, it's super easy.

Just use fire, higher, desire, etc.

Oh you mean GOOD lyrics !?!?!

I've failed at writing decent lyrics every time I've tried. They're always trite and dumb and make the listeners run and hide. If only folks would recognize that doggerel's an art, my prose would earn me millions.

I like the lyrics to "Salt Peanuts". Maybe use that as some inspiration?

I used to think lyrics were the only thing I was good at, but actually, I don;t seem to feel inclined to express things that way anymore.

Maybe you need to do a Lewey and write a song about Miata or boobies or something?

Pron is always a good source of inspiration.

This is true. But I can't write about boobies.

The good news is, nowdays you don't need good lyrics to have a successful song.

It's all in the presentation:

Well, my heart went "boom" when I crossed that room and I held her hand in mine...
Whoah, we danced through the night, and we held each other tight and before too long
I fell in love with her, now I'll never dance with another (Whooh) since I saw her standing there

Love, love me do
You know I love you
I'll always be true
So please, love me do
Whoa, love me do

Listen
Do you want to know a secret
Do you promise not to tell, whoa oh, oh
Closer
Let me whisper in your ear
Say the words you long to hear
I'm in love with you

Last night I said these words to my girl
I know you never even try, girl
C'mon (C'mon), c'mon (C'mon), c'mon (C'mon), c'mon (C'mon)
Please please me, whoa yeah, like I please you

Sha la la la la la la la
Sha la la la la la la la
Sha la la la la la la la
Sha la la la la
Uh oh,
It doesn't matter what they say,
I know I'm gonna love you any old way.
What can I do, and it's true.
Don't want nobody, nobody, 'cause baby, it's you. (sha la la la la la la)
Baby, it's you. (sha la la la la la la)

Close your eyes and I'll kiss you
Tomorrow I'll miss you
Remember I'll always be true
And then while I'm away
I'll write home every day
And I'll send all my loving to you
All my loving I will send to you
All my loving, darling I'll be true
All my loving, all my loving ooh
All my loving I will send to you

Can't buy me love, love
Can't buy me love, love love

Help, I need somebody
Help, not just anybody
Help, you know I need someone, HALP!

I think I'm gonna be sad
I think it's today, yeah
The girl that's driving me mad
Is going away

Baby you can drive my car
Yes I'm gonna be a star
Baby you can drive my car
And maybe I love you

I was alone, I took a ride
I didn't know what I would find there
Another road where maybe I could see another kind of mind there
Ooh, then I suddenly see you
Ooh, did I tell you I need you
Every single day of my life

Ob-la-di ob-la-da life goes on bra
La-la how the life goes on
Ob-la-di ob-la-da life goes on bra
La-la how the life goes on

Mother Superior jump the gun
Mother Superior jump the gun
Mother Superior jump the gun
Mother Superior jump the gun
Mother Superior jump the gun
Mother Superior jump the gun

Why don't we do it in the road? Mm
Why don't we do it in the road? Ah
Why don't we do it in the road? Mm
Why don't we do it in the road? Mm
No one will be watching us
Why don't we do it in the road?

She came in through the bathroom window
Protected by a silver spoon
But now she sucks her thumb and wanders
By the banks of her own lagoon

(Bom bom bom) Sail the ship
(Bompa bom) Chop the tree
(Bompa bom) Skip the rope
(Bompa bom) Look at me
(All together now) All together now
(All together now) All together now
(All together now) All together now
(All together now) All together now
(All together now) All together now
(All together now) All together now
(All together now) All together now
(All together now) All together now
(All together now) All together now
(All together now) All together now
(All together now) All together now
(All together now) All together now

I'll agree that lyrics are overrated.

At least, that's my excuse.

Call the village band out, bid me goodbye
Everybody stand outside and cry
Never thought so many thought me so dear
I'd be happy any place but here

One way ticket take me anywhere
Northbound, Southbound I don't even care
I know the grass is greener there

People in the city leave you alone
Everyday is pretty much your own
One among the many, year after year
I'd be happy any place but here

One way ticket take me anywhere
Northbound, Southbound I don't even care
I know the grass is greener there

Look over the passing train and there I am
No matter where I am
I'm passing through

One way ticket take me anywhere
Northbound, Southbound I don't even care
I know the grass is greener there

I just love the Mama Cass version of this song. I'm now posting lyrics because Plinky said it was O.K.

God damn that dog
God damn that dog

Sleepin' tight in the night
Dreamland gives way to a horrible sound
Too late to reach the door in time
She barfs on the carpet

God damn that dog
God damn that dog
