My first gig ca. 1989; right after the show. I was 15 years old. Set list included about 85% covers. Some highlights were:

Live and Let Die
School [fuck yeah!]
Take the Long Way Home
Eminence Front

I was a goody two-shoes. Don't drink, don't smoke (what do you do?) I was boring then, and I'm even more boring now!

Actually, I'm the one in the middle, although I did have one :freak: beer that night. The guy with the beer however didn't turn 21 until six months later.

Oh and those aren't mullets. You see, back then there was no such thing as a mullet; that word didn't exist.

1981, I think. Nightclub band, two guitars, bass, drums, keys, three of us could sing lead and harmony. We played probably 40 songs, including

Behind Blue Eyes
Come Sail Away
Comfortably Numb
Dust in the wind
Abacab
Turn it on (turn it on again)
Flight of the Phoenix/Foot Stompin Music/Rock & Roll Soul medley

No pics.

I'm going to say my first actual gig was about... 1986. I'm pretty sure it was a charity gig, so no monies, it was likely for an MS Walkathon thingy. That was pretty much an annual gig I did for several years with the same guys.

I'm haveing a hard time remember the first playlist, but I can tell you that we played all of these at some point:

Heard It Through the Grapevine
Shotgun
Black Velvet
Goodbye to You
Long Train Running
Hold the Line
Love Shack
Fire
Turn it on Again (hey plinky!)

I know there was more but I just can't remember. For the last few years we had a solid lead singer, she was really good. I learned to sing background harmonies while playing, but it took lots of practice 'cause I normally can't even speak coherently while I'm playing. :) By that time I had transitioned from keyboards to bass.

As I understand it, it's the abbreviated form of "giggity giggity".

But srsly, I understand it to mean some sort of paying job. I believe it used to refer only to a job as a musician. It seem that Clav must further define the guidelines of his inquiry.

For instance, EP says he received no monies, but monies were paid by the spectators, so, in this context I would consider that as a gig. Before I was ever paid, I sat in occasionally with pick up bands at this or that house party, but I wouldn't call that a gig.

And I didn't value the money part of gigging all that highly, but of course I didn't decline it either. Come to think of it, I didn't ever go looking for a spot in a 'working' band, they always came to me. I turned down a few pretty good offers for one reason or another...

I am now curious: How did you all get involved with your first 'serious' band. And by serious, I don't mean they regularly played for money, but they actually learned at least a handful of songs all the way through, with singing parts if required. Not just getting together to jam on drunken twelve bar stuff.

Myself, I jammed occasionally with several geetar bass drum types in HS, but I never had anything but a Farfisa spinet (that'll limit ya, lemme tell ya). I did have teh Leslie 147 to run it through, so it sounded pretty good. In college, somebody loaned me a Farfisa Mini Compact which I ran through the Les, but I did very little jamming. When I got back from college, I paid no attention to teh musics because I was busy enjoying the heretofore unknown pleasure of Spending Paychecks.

After a few years of that, someone gave me a Hammond spinet which revived my interest in playing. I bought a used ARP OMNI 2 and an Oddysey & had some fun for a few months just all by myself. Somehow one of the HS jam buddies heard I had some equipment, called me and said "Dude, my working band need a keyboard guy. If you're at least as good as you were back then, yer in". I got together with them, they thought I wasn't half bad and figured they couldn't do better, & said "OK, get a portable piano, learn these 40 songs & be ready to go in a month." And no, I did not learn 40 songs in a month, but I learned enough to get by & they were satisfied.

The moral of the story is: back then, a multi-keyboard player who could reasonably hold is own was hard to come by. And, I could sing, fix busted gear, and was not too much of an asshole.

I know some of you aren't band oriented, so you are excused from this assignment. But you must still answer Mr. ClavaNosey.
