This thread is gross.

ah yes the cordyceps fungus, that didn't take long !

Image

This image may look like something dreamed up for a surreal horror movie, but it's a real horror for the tarantula in question. This unfortunate arachnid is infected with Cordyceps, a parasitic fungus that replaces its host's tissue with its own.

Cordyceps fungi invades its hosts (mainly arthropods), and its mycelium eventually replaces the host's tissue. Once the arthropod is dead, cylindrical or branching growths emerge from the creature's dead body. Some species also have mind-control capabilities, convincing the host to travel to a place where the fungus will find optimal growth conditions before the host dies. If you haven't seen it yet, this video from Planet Earth shows a Cordyceps fungus in action:

+1 Plinky, should move it to the DIY thread for sure.

It will make it easier to find when we go to make our own.

Nope, I'm not touching that thing.

In a dorm I once occupied, the cockaroaches totally pwnd the bldg. My roomies & I were nerd school dudes, so we invented various ways to destroy or at least attempt to repel them. Nothing was very efficacious, but one of the most satisfying method of torment involved aluminum foil glued to a one foot square of plywood. We cut a 1/2" wide 6" circle out of the foil & attached a regular household electrical cord, hot conductor on the inside section of foil & neutral on the outside. Lay it on the kitchen floor, put some bait in the middle, plug it in, turn off the lights. When the roaches crossed the gap: zap. It would have been way more fun if you could have watched, but the sneaky bastids wouldn't come out in the light. You could hear them pop, though...

i encounter roaches for my day job constantly, and it's really making me shop around for a new one at this point (anyone need a solder jockey/video/audio editing monster/electronics field service?) . on Friday i walked into a dude's house to fix his malfunctioning alarm panel. looked at the screen - number of odd characters showing up, crazy lights flashing, very strange malfunction. heard a slight buzzing from within the alarm panel, and pressed down the latches to pop it open - the moment i did that, the roaches began swarming out, all over my hands, up my arms under the sleeves of my jacket, just all over. i started jumping around like a little girl.

i happen to be very allergic to their droppings, so it required a doctor visit. roaches are the worst in the world.

earthworms i can deal with! used to pluck them out of the ground after a rain to sell in my grandpa's bait vending machine.

I so would, too.

This thread is the most full of win thing I've seen in ages. Love the Cordyceps. Anything that kills nasty bugs is ok by me. How long until they make a movie about genetically modified Cordyceps that attack humans? Man I should write and sell that movie plot. A group of Teenagers (played by 30yolds of course) + a mad scientist + brain-dominating Cordyceps = win win win

Im' more of an open nutella man myself. Of course I'm sure that in your eyes, that merely confirms the fact that I am the 13 year old girl you always though I was. but let me assure you that is absolutely not true.
