given that more or less, they run the same hardware as PCs, I've always had a hard time justifying the cost. When I was younger, hacking was fun and gave you that "ownership" feeling. But these days.. :idk: I use office, Ableton Live and Firefox. Image

Even though I'm not swept up in the perceived coolness of them, I am interested in learning about them. paying for them, not so much.

Ok, so...mirroring: Latency is too bad to do recording using mirroring with Garage Band.

BonsoWonderDog wrote:Exactly. That's what I hate about Apple - the closed ecosystem that sucks you in so you can't get out.

And even given the above:

I have an iPhone only because work gives me one.
I have an iPod shuffle because it ROCKS :-).
Wifey has an iPhone because someone gave her one for Christmas
Eldest son has an iPod Touch to play games on.

However, when I went to buy a tablet I refused to get an iPad, and I'm happy with that decision. On my Nexus 10 I can use external USB drives, play video in any format, and do lots of other things that would be forbidden on an iPad.

Well, it's a trade-off. Security is tight, the ecosystem is closed. True enough. The plus side is you get no (by comparison) issues with crashing, compatibility, viruses, and the like. Like I said, it's certainly not for everyone, but as of right now I am a total Apple fanboy. Perhaps it's because I'm getting older and just don't care, or that Apple products are so easy (probably another symptom of aging). Regardless, Apple owns me for now. If it ain't your thang, then it ain't. :jam:

well probably but I also have a mean practical streak. To me, the extra cost is hardly justified. 3-500$ is money I could spend on something else. Now granted, yea you do need a general alignment of cost and value, which I don't mind paying a bit more to get something better. But I tend to think with apple, that extra is either the name or the looks. Neither are that important to me. Furniture, sure. I'm willing to for something that looks good and will last. But a computer? there's only so many instragram photos you can take of it before you have to get a new one.

But don't get me wrong, I'm going to use the heck out of my mac book. At least only for the sake of calling myself an informed, maladjusted human.

It must be a delight to develop for iOS knowing there's such a small number of devices to test it on. Imagine developing for Android etc where there are a billion different varieties of device.

As a developer, my preference would definitely be to the One Ring of a single, walled garden. We're doing some Android development here (not me), and I know the guys are always running into minute differences between devices that trips them up.

Okay, I'll let you have 16 minutes then. I've got a Blackberry I've had for almost 2 years. Contract is up in May and I'll be getting an iPhone to replace it. Already have GF iPhone, GF iPad, GF iPod Touch, my iPad HD iPod touch, and almost forgot ... her iPod Nano (which I plan to turn into a watch). So the iPhone just makes sense. All my computers are currently PCs. I used to use Macs only.

Meanwhile, the Apple TV is intriguing to me. I'd really like a Mac Mini for the studio and a MacBook Pro for school.
