A boy I was at school with used to have a thing about dripping and marmite sandwiches.

Seem to remember them being quite nice, although I don't think I could face making one.

Isn't marmite some kind of pasty spread?

Yeah, the hundreds of miles of soybeans I'm surrounded with are industrial hybrids, just like the field corn. In fact, most farmers around here plant Roundup Ready™ beans, which means you can spray the field with the really powerful weedkiller Roundup™, and it doesn't faze the beans at all.

So, yeah, Frankenfood...

When my wife and I adjusted meals to be More Healthy (TM) a while back, yeah, we experienced similar things.

For me, it's more that deep fried things in restaurants are often Yuck, as is *excessively* greasy pan frying etc. Like mentioned before, a little grease / oil / butter goes a long way. If your meal is drowning in that stuff, it's likely to cause that Yuck feeling later.

I think some of it is cheap ingredients too. We don't home deep fry but we have had stuff from people who do, and you don't get the Yuck *as* much from that, despite the general unhealthy nature of it all. Probably because most restaurants use Weird Shit like "partially hydrogenated soybean oil" to deep fry, and anyone who can cook wouldn't even think about putting that in their deep fryer. Bacon's probably healthier than that "partially hydrogenated soybean oil" deep fried stuff, to be honest.

Haven't cooked bacon in a while. But I do have a cast iron grill pan for Simulated Outdoor Grilling goodness. I bet bacon could be done rather nicely on that. And actually be less greasy, which for me at least would be a bonus.

Which means that our cooking oil has Roundup in it?

Isn't that the stuff that's supposed to be killing all the bees?

I grew up with Vegemite, Marmite and Promite.

I guess that explains it.

We had peanut butter-n-jelly with whole milk. Some (most, probably) even liked real butter on their PBJs. I still like a PB sammich now and then, but I prefer it plain, albeit on toasted wheat bread.

One of his professors is obsessed with fermentation... I think the grossest is a weird inuit dish he tries to recreate by burying a dead seal stuffed with dead seaguls... lol it's kind of surreal.
