My wife has a recipe for black beans from her Cuban uncle. Put them beans on some rice with some salsa... muy delicioso.

I can make some pretty good beans with my slow cooker (they cook for 8-10 hours). It involved bacon. So of course they're very good.

Nothing can compare to a brazilian "feijoada" by the way. It's been a while since my wife made one... I gotta remind her

This describes it pretty well: http://www.bizarreworldfoods.com/feijoada/ - thought that recipe is not very accurate. The accurate description would be "use whatever pork parts you have available" my wife usually uses the brazilian sausage, bacon and lots of smoked pork ribs.

Speaking of which. I'm getting kinda hungry again.

So basically, "bacon stew".

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and admit that, while I do like bacon, I don't LOVE bacon.

I'm not that crazy about bacon, either, though as seasoning in reasonable amounts, it's awesome.

That's why I like the "feijoada" better with the smoked pork ribs. You really can't beat the taste.

Those refried beans I used didn;t taste of anything.

We don;t really have them here as a concept, but there were a few tins on the very top shelf of the mexican section at the supermarket.

i made some pretty awesome nachos on friday. i usually go with:

- 'hint of lime' tortillas
- lots of cheddar, colby and monteray jack cheese
- green/red/yellow peppers, spanish onion and habanero peppers

sometimes i'll throw ground beef, chorizo sausage, refried beens, jalapenos, scallions, black olives, etc on there but with good medium to spicy salsa and sour cream they're awesome.

bonus is when you make fresh guac from just past ripe avocados.

Did I ever tell you guys about the time I was tricked into eating authentic menudo? I found it pretty tasty, but when I found out what sort of meat it contained, I lost my stomach for it.

Even though I live in the land of Immigrants From Across the Border, I've never had menudo. Sometimes you'll run across a place advertising it, along with other Mexican delights, but I've never partaken.

Teh wife had haggis last year while in the UK. She said she actually liked it.

So, say a guy plays a bass guitar once, no big, right? Try a glass of pink lemonade? Eh, who cares?

But, you eat just one lousy Menudo...

I think he was the straight one.

Anyway, my family is of German descent, so that Menudo soup doesn't sound disgusting at all to me. It actually sounds tasty.

Germans (at least those who migrated to Brazil in the late 19th Century, which is the culture I grew up in) have some pretty interesting dishes. Like this one, which is way more tender than your tenderest fillet mignon:

I won't tell you what that is, though...

Then there's this:

And this:

It's all delicious to me... :idk:

The cow stomach thing is tripe here... don;t think i've tried it, have no particular objection to it, just not very popular in this age.

I want to try it now.

Those americans are gastronomic lightweights!

Speaking of food.

Does anyone else here make their own bread, or just me? (bread machines ftw)
