alright woodsmiths..

Postby MetroSonus » Thu Oct 06, 2011 12:50 pm

if I built a desk at 32 inches high, how wide would the base need to be so that it doesn't topple over?

the reason I ask is cause I want to build a desk that's only about as wide as my laptop. if i construct two sides and a back and a tray that holds my controller that slides out, will it topple over?

there's gotta be some pythagorian ration about the height to width of it's base or something I don't know.. so come on, clue me into your masonry termite club or something.,

Dunno, but you could small scale a few designs from say cereal box card and see how stable they are? I'm going to guess that tople-ability is all about ratio so they should scale up fine.

It's more about center of gravity relative to any point that could pivot (namely where the legs meets the floor). What I'd say is, build what you want, BUT add a shelf or something near the bottom that you could load something heavy on to shift the center of gravity closer to the floor.

Also, narrow tables aren't uncommon, they go in places like hallways and such. I think they're usually called side tables.

That doesn't look any worse or better than an X-stand. :idk: If you can afford the space though, I'd try to make it deeper (wider?) at the bottom.

Thinking it over on the way home, what I am going to do is put the keyboard in front of the laptop, but a bit lower without a slider. That will give it more width and be the same as I was using it on my hacked x stand

And so a plan is hatched and all is well. Now I must go back to busting-up doors so they fit in the trash.

Old doors make great laptop stands.

Now let's talk about my needs. I'm sick of all the clutter in my studio. I need ideas for some kind of cabinet in which to store studio doodads like cables, mics, manuals ect. I'd love to find a big old wooden wardrobe or armoire for cheap:

oooh that armoire. Me gusta. Actually, that's a good idea for various studio doodad storage. I have a guest room setup as my studio, so I've taken over the closet, too. The previous owners had a crappy closet organizer system installed, so I use the crappy drawers and crappy shelves for my stuff. It beats leaving it strewn around the floor (although I still do that anyway, lol.)

I always wind up with spare cables all over the place, though. And keyboards standing on end against the wall, because the crappy organizer in the closet left no floor space in there.

Ah, ok, i had misunderstood.

In that case, look at quiklok's catalogue and rip the ratios from there.

I can't find a rack mount PC case that I like. So I'm just going to alter the guts of a tower case, turn it on it's side, and make a face for it. Why not wood?

But not as stupid looking. What could one do if one isn't particularly gifted with ninja wood skillz or patience to spend hours on it? I want to use maple since my desk is already made of fake maple and I have a nice stick of white maple hardwood. I have a router and I'm not afraid to use it.

The internets already have many fine examples of wooden PC cases. This one is nice and simple:

I've no idea. But your criteria, "no ninja wood skillz and no patience" tells me you'd be better off finding a non-wood solution. How about just order some aluminium sheet and just have at it with a drill?

why can't you find a rack case you like? It doesn't need to do much other than just sit in a rack right?
