Am I being too anal about the meaning of words?

probably.

I think you're saying success to mean commercially successful, when it's possible to also mean personally successful.

I think accomplishment and successful can be used interchangeably, but if I had to split hairs, accomplishment would imply something material and successful would imply something more intrinsic.

So using that in a sentence would would say:

This week I made the great accomplishment of releasing my first album on the internet. While it wasn't a commercial success, it was a personal one as I learned many tips and tricks that i will put to use on my next album.

Well, you might be right, and "personal success" might not be an oxymoron after all...

it just doesn't work if you try to argue it in subjective terms. it's like a frog riding a bicycle.. it's just one of those things..

When I was gigging, I had to learn lots of other people's songs, sometimes challenging (to me), sometimes in key sigs I didn't like, sometimes even (horrors) requiring good chops! It can be described as nothing else but work.

That was then. Now I'm a hobbyist.

When I'm noodling by myself, I catch me running through many of the same old riffs & progressions. It's easy, entertaining, and it just feels good. Musical masturbation. I'm mostly self-taught, so I never achieved that teacher-imposed discipline that's necessary to become really proficient. This sometimes gives me guilt when I think about it. But who am I cheating? Only myself, I think. 'Family' doesn't complain if I'm not among them 24/7. Sometimes I can even engage the younglings in synth noodlings for a short time.

The Boy indulges in the same repetitive riffing with his geetars. I used to bug him about it, but now, meh. Let him have fun, I say. He jams with friends, it sounds awful, but they think they're Rawk Gods. I'm honest with him, & tell him he will be sorry in the future if he doesn't spend more time now on the rudiments, but I won't Nazi him about it. Dealing with disappointment also builds character.

I thought I already did.. have fun mainly.

I'd like to keep getting better at it though.. but it's still just a hobby. the thing is, there's tons of people like your kid out there that record it all and post it online and think makes them awesome.. I just dont want to be one of those people

If you combine it with "career" I'd tend to agree with your definition, as career I guess implies making money etc....

But just being "successful" I think is much more open to interpretation and personal goals.
