philisophical question..

Postby MetroSonus » Thu Apr 07, 2011 1:18 am

it's probably stupid to ask, but why does creating the music I like to write, ambient/drone/slightly danceish / soundscapey / I dont know whatish, feel like cheating sometimes?

It's fun, it's relaxing, I enjoy being experimental and I just don't want to have to compose something in x, y patterns. I shouldn't have an issue with it, but why does it feel weird?

I suppose it's hard to compose in a vacuum and just totally be yourself..

I can't answer that. I spend all my music time basically wanking away playing little throwaway grooves and generally improvising. My guilt stems from not recording most of it, or figuring out a way to make them "real songs".

Do I *need* to make real songs? Is it OK to just have a pile of gear that I basically do nothing more than fart around with?

I dunno.

I have to have natural, free range, rainwater and grain fed, non hormonal eggs other wise I find the sulfur content is too high and they hurt my stomach :(

I don't see why not as long as you arrange the time and money and other stuff you spend on it in alignment with that goal. If you want that to be your goal that is.

I think my problem is, I really like those genres. But I also think they tend to be, like a sort of cop out genre for people too. So i feel like if i'm not doing something more visible or hip with a marketing campaign behind it, i'm cop-ping out too.

Although i dont think i am. I try really hard and I think I have better, more consistent production and composing technique than most of the "noise" people come up with and try to call it art.

The question always is, do you make music for yourself, or for others?

A successful artist is one who makes music for others to enjoy... but not necessarily for him/herself.

Not all successful artists feel good about their own music...

I'm right in the middle with that one.. Success to me is determined by my own set of standards. But at the same time I like to put stuff out there and meet people and perform, but I don't need or care for success to be measured in terms of sales, image, "likes" or whatever. I enjoy keeping track of stats merely for feedback.. well you know.

Not quite :jam:

Success is always about whether other people like it or not.

Accomplishment is a far more personal thing... I know it's semantics but once you decide whether you want to feel like you accomplish something or you want to be successful, it's easier to track your results.

But even genius people like Dali seemed to be constantly thinking "hmmm what else can I do that will amaze people?". So success is not overrated, I think

don't anger me with semantics

But I think that's almost self criticism unless one is intentionally trying to access a given social or cultural situation to produce something with that effect. I think the challenge is to constantly evolve and well challenge yourself. One feeds into the other IMO.

Well, amazing myself is easy enough. What's hard is to amaze other people

They usually have higher musical standards and/or entertainment concepts than I do :poke:

Well that's what the poke icon was for.

Usually success is determined by a melody that sticks like glue in your head, and an arrangement that makes you move your rear end. Or, by girls getting dreamy-eyed.

That's the world's high standards. :poke: conform, or be cast out.

Well you can always say "No one's every liked anything I did but I do, so I've had a successful career, baby!".

See if this doesn't make more sense: "I don't really care if people like what I have done, but I personally feel like I accomplished what I set out to do, and I'm pleased with that."

Am I being too anal about the meaning of words?
