So Tom Oberheim has been asked, and has given a soft acceptance of being the keynote speaker/guest of honour at this years banquet. I guess he would have to reschedule a doctors appointment and stuff...but maybe he'll be able to do it. I think this would be quite cool. It seems that I would be sitting at his table at the dinner.

WHO'S COMING??

And I'm seriously needing to meet up with you guys... I've even been to the St Pete area with the family and didn't get to meet Metro or Soundwave...

If we did it here, probably everybody could have a different synth and/or electro-mechanical in each hand simultaneously, I mean...just about, you know

EP, I recall a big Flashlight jam like that once upon a time when you visited that seemed fun at the time.

So yesterday I was setting up the large exhibit room and a guy from Roland came in and asked if he could stash a box at his booth early. Afterwards someone asked what I thought it was and I said the stupidest thing I could think of: "it's probably a boutique d50"

And it is

You know, relatively low cost VST emus are kind of cool. Like the Korg Legacy collection. There is still an occasional need to evoke 90s vibe and go "M1 Universe, go!". Or kind of evoke Discovery Channel documentary soundtrack nostalgia (and nostalgia for when they did documentaries) with the Wavestation. But there isn't *that* much of a need. Omnisphere out-documentary soundtracks anything out there, after all...

I love the D-50, have a real one. But, man, it's hard to use it without evoking 1980s nostalgia (unless you are programming it yourself, in which case, gorgeous spacey pads are possible, but ugh 2 line LCD. Aliased to hell though and it sort of clashes with the modern vibe.) I wish Roland didn't screw up their VST edition with expensive cloud crap. I'm going to guess editing the Boutique D-50 is going to be a pain in the tuckus without their VST.

This is all my opinion, of course. I'm sure they will sell buckets to nostalgiaheads.

And Roland fanboys in general, to whom Roland can do no wrong - and even if Roland does something wrong, they'll buy it anyways because as everyone knows, every Roland mistake becomes a culture-changing synth breakthrough

I would have been on board with their vsts if it wasn't for the cloud subscription

I can't remember if I've mentioned this here yet, but I think it's pretty interesting that Tom Oberheim publicly stated that NAMM is out dated and useless and he will only be attending KnobCon from now on. He also said his friends agree and he thinks Roger Lynn will be the last to abandon NAMM. He raised a fist in the air and said "on with Knobcon". I think suit was rather proud.
