There's a Gearslutz thread I remember seeing with someone trying to do exactly that. Hasn't really progressed far.

In many ways the Andromeda could use a digital overhaul period. The Andromeda's CPU, a late 1990s Motorola Coldfire is going to be beaten by, well, probably most things modern. Heck even a simple ARM microcontroller, I bet, would kill it these days.

The Prophet 6 as an example seems to use a Spartan 6 FPGA and a 32 bit PIC controller for the digital / main board. Relatively modest stuff.

I wish companies would open source OS code etc. upon discontinuing the product. (I love with Mutable Instruments is doing in open sourcing their products for instance, definitely increases the longevity potential of their modules.) The Andromeda is still a unique synthesizer, nothing quite like it on the market, but it's hard to recommend that people buy a used one these days. Too much other good stuff out there and who knows what will die on what's now a 15 year old synth.

I would just like to point out the Minilogue is the official NAMM 2016 winner.

Guys, you should all get this keyboard. I'm not even kidding.

Also:

I am impressed with the sound of the OB-6. I am not impressed with its price tag.

I feel the same way about the MatrixBrute that I do about all modular synths.

I haven't read or heard anything about the Montage, other than it exists.

And Casio had some kind of workstation thingy too. :idk:

Nearly everything else at NAMM was :poke: or :horse: or worse yet, :samsh:

I was pretty impressed with the Expressive E controller myself, but that's sort of a specialty thing. I would need decent specs / technical info too. (Roli for instance is hush hush on their MIDI implementation. As cool as their controllers look, that's a deal breaker for me.)

Elsewise, I'm with you. Not a whole lot tickled me this year. (Not even the Minilogue, as cool as it is. ) But it might be because I already have TOO MUCH STUFF. :tounge:

Gah, me too, Soundblaze. Not really, but compared to my output, it's way too much. If I actually synthed as much as I should, i wouldn't have enough.

That Matrix thing, that's almost a modular, with all it's mod routing powers, rite?

How much modular can one get for $1800?

The "cheap" way into modular is semi-modular -- complete voices with lots of patch options. $1800 is three Moog Mother 32s for instance. Or a Mother 32 and one of the more boutique options (like an Intellijel Atlantis, Pittsburgh Lifeforms, or that Eurorack SEM module if it ever actually comes out.)

Some manufacturers are also less expensive overall; Doepfer's basic system is 1975 euro, which thanks to the strong USD is only $2100ish at the moment. Actually the most basic .com system is $1600.

That being said, you won't be able to save your patches. Assuming the sound is good, this would be much better for bands touring that want "modular weirdness". I can't see touring with an actual modular (I know a few bands do but I think they are crazy  )

I played with that thing last year before it was released. I wouldn't use one if it was free.

I'd take a free one.

However all of the modern Moog stuff I've bought (Minitaur and some Moogerfoogers), I've sold. :idk:

Still, you're talking about someone who didn't really care for the *original* Minimoog sound, either. (Now, I do remember thinking the Memorymoog was pretty awesome. But that thing has more bugs than, er, an Alesis Andromeda.)

I do have an Atlantis and I like it. Has Roland vibes, but isn't exactly a clone of anything in particular.

The sound of the Mother 32 seems good if you are into the modern Moog sound though... :idk:

The muthasuxa32000 project was owned by the marketing director. I forget her name, but she has no business making an actual usable instrument.

It's....retarded.

Wut's rertadred, the synth, or the fact that a woman helmed the proj?

Or are you saying 'cause and effect"? :nudge:

Or maybe 'form follows function'? :saynomore:

I'm saying that marketing directors have no business designing products.

at admit, for 600$ it's one oscilator is head scratching. they could have dropped the sequencer and added a few more or a sub. Would have been happy. Sounds good though.. :idk: At least it sounds better than the minitaur to me.

I get the M32.

It's reason for being is in the name: Mother. For anyone just getting into modular, it's not a bad start. MIDI interface? Check. Don't have a MIDI keyboard? No problem, its got a sequencer. No other modules yet? No problem, it's got a basic synth. From there you can just add to it as you see fit.

I don't hate it.
