You need a controller that sends sysex.. Most don't. just generic CC data.

That's why I've hung onto EPs old PCR. Sends CC, Sysex and NRPNs.

maybe. do you get any kind of MIDI control panel? you could create one and then link your controller to that.

FL studio used to have one. they had all kinds of neat features.

I honestly don't know. I am pretty MIDI ignorant. I shall investigate.

I'll definitely check it out when I have some studio time next. Tomorrow night:

Mike and Ben's Annual Pumpkin' Carvin' Gathering

Then Saturday night:

Costume Party at a friend's.

Full weekend. :thu:

welcome to my own thread !!

so i now haz joined boutique club with venerable jp-08 mini !!1

here's a website with a chrome browser-based boutique editor:

http://www.breadandbuttersounds.com/

you can't use usb apparently you need to have a midi interface connected to your computer and have the broutique unit in poly chain mode or something, but you can send settings from the inter webs and outer webs

:spaceboy:

i've been messing with the jp-08 plugged into the v-synth inputs and doing fm, COSM effects, etc its been pretty fun. you can also run sounds into the jp-08 i'm assuming to use the filter?

i emailed novation to ask if there's a way to get midi into and out of the daw with a hardware synth without causing a midi loop? (even with local off on the v-synth)

with my v-synth gt i can get midi into logic (and thus to the jp-08) but i can't get midi out to the v-synth to sequence it. it will only play one note then stop (midi loop i think? or maybe a bug).

anyways, my experiments have been fun and some of the wave shaping, ring mod, bit crusher, etc from the v-synth has made the jp-08 seriously dirty in a digital way. i must try sampling it and making loops, etc for further processing...

I was having a letch over these in PMT yesterday, they're sweet, although I'm not a fan of mini keys.

There's a lot of sweet kit around at the moment, I'm only surprised they didn't have a box of tissues lying around in their upstairs synth section.

so now the main limitation seems to be polyphony

i've seen a couple of the boutiques second hand locally...

what would be really cool would be polychaining 2 different boutique models like a jp-08 and a ju-06 and deciding which control panel/synth you would like the slave to be. for example, you could power them on in a certain order or push a combination of buttons, etc.

now you could for example chain a jp-08 to a ju-06 but I think it just passes along the 5-8 notes to the other model and control panel changes aren't registered. so if the 2 synths have very different settings then when poly 1-4 is used up the second synth would just add different voices. very cool for layering but limited to 4 voice poly:

the answer, at least for me, is likely to just get another jp-08 lol:

the best part of this synth for me and what sets it apart from plug-ins is the way it takes effects. its so much more subtle and nuanced than my plug-ins so a reverb, chorus, distro, etc just makes huge changes where plug-ins seem to need a heavy dose just turn into mush sometimes

I'm under the impression even with 2 of the same models long release times on a pad for example would still be cut-off with voice stealing at 4 note poly. the 5-8 voices seem to only be activated by pressing 5+ keys at the same time, which could be a deal breaker

Can you download the manual anywhere? Might be worth checking if you can choose different modes for voice allocation?

i posted this over in the gs boutique thread:

here's a link to the jp-08 manual:
Roland - Support - JP-08 - Owner's Manuals - JP-08 Owner's Manual

the midi implementation:
https://www.roland.com/global/support/by_product/jp-08/owners_manuals/504c4c6a-fcbb-4347-b15d-bfba89785b89/

i made a jp-08 template for my ReMOTE SL 37 for bigger knobs & sliders but its not 100%

some stuff like Vco Wave 2 or HPF parameters aren't working, aren't showing up as midi cc's in logic (from the novation) and i'm not sure what to change. in the editor i set them to the cc number so i might just have to dump my logic control pref file and do a fresh rescan.

Image

here's a link to the jp-08 template (sysex file) for other jp-08 and novation sl owners:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/xh0kpsnmn0hvs35/Roland%20-%20JP-08.syx?dl=0

i'm also trying to figure out how to get the control change output switch to work but logic doesn't seem to be seeing any information from the jp-08:
Roland - Support - JP-08 - Owner's Manuals - JP-08/JU-06/JX-03 Version 1.10 Supplementary Manual

i've been messing around with the new midi input on the jp-08. this setup is for subtle pitch mod with logic's midi modulators:

Image

midi cc 23 for vco-2 tune and 1 mod wheel for subtle semi-tone modulation using a random lfo, 100% smoothing and similarity at different rates. stacking pads up makes it sound thicker this way

now that midi is assignable logic's midi envelopes and lfos are a lot of fun to mess around with assigning them to different things and seeing what happens. the modulation options are nearly infinite

for effects i like to use the uad neve 88rs mk2 with slight sparkle boost (13-18khz) and subtle bass boost, plus the dim d for spacialization or uad rmx16 in chorus mode or dark plate for added reverb/tone

hey miek u still visit ?

there's a new plug-in template for the ju-06 for teh daw control:
https://ask.audio/articles/this-midi-ed ... -fantastic

i hope they make one for the jp-08!

i've been experimenting with the slate virtual tape machine. a neat trick is turning the input way down for added hiss, also added wow and flutter. the vintage lovers would feel very good about this !

added bonus points for ers dim d (roland dimension d) for widen stereo hiss!

i wonder if the system 8 jupiter and juno 106 will be available as plug-INs like the sh-101 and other plug-outs. my jp-08 could layer with it for 12 voices and as a control surface. this would likely work with a ju-06 as well.

It's been 13 months since I bought the JP-08, and I just plugged it into a midi keyboard for the first time. I like it.
