when they were new, most people were using them in dance music at 8 and 16 bar intervals to give a glitchy / eroded feel to a shuffle or something in place of a drum roll or whatever.

@si my fav 'bit crusher' was in fruity loops many many versions ago (3 or 4 ?)

it was actually a 'bit reducer' for entire projects. i absolutely love the dark, lofi vibe it puts on sounds

this effect can likely still be achieved with stand alone programs like sound forge saving sounds at different bits/rates.

I remember audio files could get sped up/slowed down opening it in a daw after ? can't remember exactly how it worked it's been a while

40, the guy who produces drakes rap music uses bit reducers (not lo pass filters) to great effect like in marvins room, etc

Atari teenage riot used to use really bad Panasonic converters on purpose to make their music harsher.

in rap many producers have saturated the analog front end of sp-1200, mpc 60/3000 and other lofi samplers to get beefy drums.

there's tons of different kinds of distortions from optical compressors, tube amps, lofi/bit crushers, pentode, germanium, transistors, etc etc etc that can be mixed & matched especially in dark techno/industrial

- bit speak (mono mangler)
- permut8 (crush & delay)
- decimort (emulator+)
- effectrix (sequenced effects)
- faturator (beefy & stereoriser)
etc
all awesum plug-ins for general beefy/sound mangling effects

there are so many others I'm forgetting
