New Gear 2015

Postby gregwar » Sun Feb 01, 2015 2:51 am

we're a month into the new year so here's a new thread !1

after considering it for the last 3-4 months i sold my excellent neumann tlm-103 mic and bought a peluso 2247 le

the tlm-103 is a large condenser that is supposed to be close to the u87 but at a price more for project studios. it has very clear and somewhat bright sound. compared to my rode mic the high end is a lot smoother and can be boosted without getting instantly harsh. other bands like the 1khz to 1.5khz (which i usually cut to remove harshness) don't seem to be as bad as the rode

choosing to upgrade to a peluso 2247le was a difficult choice. its my first tube mic and is supposed to be a close copy of the neumann u47. compared to the tlm-103 it has warmer, fuller mids and less bright, while still having some top end shine while still being really detailed and clear

it comes in a flight case with its own shock mount, power supply, specialty cable, and a separate wood box for the mic. it has 9 polar patterns so it can be used in omni, cardioid and many settings in between. cardioid is best for vox but i would like to experiment with omni if i can record and ensemble in a nice room or a full drum kit

the external power supply was new to me (no phantom power needed). i was experiencing ground hum at first. i made sure the cables weren't crossing and i kept my other power supplies away from the power cables, mic cables, etc. i got a 3 prong to 2 prong ground lift for the 2247 power supply and this helped with the final bit of hum

the le stands for limited edition, it has a german 'ef' style tube from between 1940-60. this is supposed to impart a vintage sound and has a slightly higher noise floor. i found by pairing it with the uad neve 1073 preamp on my apollo it sounded 'big', 'larger-than-life', 'warm', 'full', etc which i was lacking from my tlm-103

i really like the idea of using single take raps (not doubling all my vocals except for special emphasis/chorus). even with no eq it was detailed, clear and full sounding. so hopefully we won't have to do a lot of eq'ing or add much processing to the vocals as the sound at the source is hopefully gonna be finally there

these are my initial impressions anyways

My name is ClavAnother. I have a problem. I love gear.

It's an A-143. That means it's a B3 in sheeps clothing. This model was only produced in 1965 so that means that they all had the red Mylar caps which means that they haven't drifted in the last fifty years as much as my '62 A-100 with the wax caps has. I am actually looking for another Model A that I will put the guts of this thing into, but the ones I have found so far are either too far/too expensive/or too fucked up to bother with.

Btw, if anyone wants to buy my A100, its for sale. It has no internal speakers and the speaker baffle has been knocked out. I'd like to tell you that this makes it lighter, but the truth is Hammind organs are flipping heavy no matter what you do.

That said, a friend and I lifted this on into my pickup pretty easily.

Regarding gooey foam, it's possible, but I wouldn't know until I disassemble the manuals. As of now I don't had any missing tones so I have no reason to suspect anything.

I know the innards are different but this looks a lot like my Carvin CTM100s (I have a pair, put some slightly lower output Phillips tubes in them and now they rock). Obviously the Peluso is an "upgraded" version in terms of the capsule, enclosure and power supply.

I'm curious as to why you went with the Peluso instead of more affordable high quality mics like the Stellar and the Avantone.

My goodness! Fancy mic is fancy.

Also, I'm pretty sure that the standard for size reference is a banana, not a 40.

This is the Carvin mic I got a couple years ago by the way, when they were selling them directly for 175 (currently they are on sale again but the price is 199).

Not bad considering what you get for the price (I got two! to have a stereo pair if needed). That was the end of the studio makeover moneys, I think (when I sold the analog studio to buy the computer based studio).

I have to say that with the two Phillips tubes it sounds pretty sweet.

I haven't gotten anything in a long time. Since I got those mics the only thing I bought was a few pedals. Which work great by the way.

And that's it for a while. We're tightening the belt this year. No gear, no vacation, not even sports for the kids this year. Which is actually what I'm most sad about

i got it partially cause i got a good price on it, partially because in central canada there aren't a lot of options for second hand gear and partially because i really wanted to try a u47-style mic.

i read a lot about building & modding mics, upgrade kits, etc. the last 3-4 years. i priced out buying a ef tube, getting a mic, a kit, all the hassle of soldering, etc. this mic is second hand and is already done, at just over the cost of building one myself

the peluso capsules aren't the finest quality ever made nor is the power supply, etc. but i read a lot of reviews and did a lot of research and just went for it, wanting to try a u47 type mic for rap

i still have my rode back up mic. i might get it modded still to be a u87 clone but i'll wait a bit and do some more research on it first

Yes. All organs should be felt. Organs that aren't felt are destined to suffer teh caustic calamities.

Hey, you know that really sweet pad you just built? I'll bet it's got.... equity. Probably more than enough for a little ol' Virus.

No. I wouldn't.

But as you all know, I really love most of VAC's old music. Many a good album was recorded using that thing. Wish I could afford to buy it - to use, and as a collector's item that no one but me would consider a collector's item lol.

I think I missed a memo. What is a "vac"? Like, Hoover or Kenmore?
