Waldorf Streichfett

Now I might be the only person that actually has GAS for this, but I do love me some 70s string machine sounds. From the demo it sounds delicious, and since I can't afford the real thing (or let alone maitain one), this seems like it would be a blast to have :)

I've not thought about it before, but maintaining something like an ARP OMNI wouldn't be onerous at all. They're very simple compared to analog poly synths. No unobtainamabobbers that I can think of. The biggest pita in the OMNI were the j-wire key contacts that broke. Even if the TOS chip crapped & you couldn't find one, you could replace it with an Arduino gizmo.

Personally though, I think most romplers have that sound covered.

Maybe the new Rolands have that sound covered well, and the Kronos too. But cheaper boards, I think, aren't going to sound like this new Waldorf. Plus, having its own unit with its own controls while it's being midi'ed has its advantages, as it is having its own dedicated purpose-built effects. And for a street price of 299... probably only like 100 dollars more than what the software would cost.

Yes. And I've been reading about this new Waldorf machine since I noticed this thread this morning. I am intrigued, and my interest is piqued. I mean, who *doesn't* love awesome synth strings?!

It's a pretty cool little box. I'm intrigued, too. But i think I can probably get that tonal palette at of SOMETHING I've already got, I'm sure.

Ok. This almost made me choke to death. From the official Waldorf site:

Its dual sound engine features a fully polyphonic strings section and an eight voice solo section, which is essential for recreating how adult movies sounded thirty years ago. The Ensemble Effect handles lubrication of the String Section...

(bolding mine)

bow-chicka-wow-wow.

But, I mean, do they mean "adult movies" or ADULT MOVIES. I'm not picking up what they're putting down.

Well, as we drove past the seedy industrial section of town, my son commented on an adult movie store "that must be where they sll rated R movies".

So apparently there are two kinds.

What I find funny too is that the German text mentions no adult movies and lubrication, instead the text seems to read (via Google translate) that composing music on a PC is said to resemble filling your annual tax return.

Reportedly, "streichfett" is a bit punny, translating to "spreadable fat" ala butter in German. From butter to lubrication to tax returns, we're talking about one *weird*, er, adult movie.... what are those Germans at Waldorf watching over there?! :freak:

There's a debate on how "streichfett" should be translated on ..damn, I've closed the tab already, but I WANNA say it was on GearSlutz. Apparently, the word can be translated several ways, but I think the intent was, as you've mentioned, "spreadable fat."
