monitors, bro

Postby gregwar » Sun Mar 16, 2014 3:34 pm

so I'm looking for studio monitors

I had yammi hs-80ms for a few years and really liked them but I was thinking of upgrading

I started a thread on fb and got a few recommendations but what does the tree haüs think ?

one recommendation was barefoot micro mains but the 27 gen 2 are like $10 000

my price range is like up to $2000, preferably less lol

o ya, since I do rap bass is pretty important I think an 8" driver is the minimum or i could add a sub (my room is large enuf), my current boom box is 2.1 with a sub

5.1 surround sound isn't a priority, in fact mixing isn't even a priority since I'm mainly interested in tracking. but it's important to hear your takes IMHO and get my ruff mixes I the ball park

thanks !

I use mackie HR824. I have had the original style for about ten years and they have been great. I actually occasionally hear people talk shit about them, but thats almost always by the kind of people who typically post on gear slortz. :freak:

They can be had for a lot less than two grand.

Been happy with my BX-8's for 7-8 years now. They do what I need and were $500 for the pair at the time. I think the price is still the same. If I were to step up, I might consider the Adams. I hear good things about them. Also would be interested in trying the JBLs with the ARC (sp?). But right now, until I "need" more critical listening, my BX8s make me happy!

My current monitoring system is Yamaha HS50s with their HS10 sub so I'd be the wrong person to ask about upgrading. :)

Adam A7X seems to be the current "step up" recommendation of choice, but I'm pretty happy with my current system.

I'm partial to the Samson resolvs; I prefer 6 or 8s.

I've only had a pair of BX-5s & a bargain Tannoy sub, so I can add no value to this discussion. But here goes anyway: $2K should get you some very good mons plus bass traps to boot.

I've got Rokkit 6" monitors with their sub. Is alright, sounded good in the old room, not so good in the new room, but that's the room's fault. I'd buy them again, but I'd go for the larger 8".

I think most people here have cheap or semi-pro speakers, so I don't know if we can help all that much... and your style of music is a lot more bass-driven than what I do.

If I had money to spend I'd check out 3-way speakers. Medium highs were always my problem mixing and I think 3-ways go a long way towards solving that. Neumann 3-way speakers will cost ya 4.5K for a pair - nice if ya can swing it :)
Focals will cost even more. And then you have ATC stuff that is priced like it has pixie dust in it. Maybe it does...

There doesn't seem to be a whole lot between "amateur" and "pro" stuff.

Back when I was trying to decide what monitors to buy (and ended up not buying any) I was looking at the Yamaha MSP series, which seems to be a step up from the HS series in terms of how flat and accurate they are. In your case I'd definitely add a sub.... But you are probably looking for something a step up from even that, if you're looking for something in the 2K range.

Get some Yamaha NS-10s. If you can make it sound good on those pieces of crap, then you're in business!

ADAM

A sub would be good if you really need low bass and went with the A7's.

I have these as well. They are nice as far as I'm concerned.

Plus, socks in the ports until I get my new studio built. :jam:

Thanks Metro... but I did NOT need that mental image.

So I'll just pretend all speaker socks have been washed with Snuggle.

Um. Dude. I'm 34 years old. I have a partner. I don't have to use socks for that purpose! lolol

The socks are clean, damnit!

Not Snuggle, though. Tide - Original Scent.

Speaking if Diametron, did you know they are making physical Googabots?
