Yamaha EX5

Postby christianrock » Fri Nov 30, 2012 3:47 pm

There's an EX5 on our local Craigslist for 550 but they've been selling on Ebay in the 300s and 400s. It's from a bass player so I was going to propose a trade deal with some bass stuff.

But as I thought of it and researched the EX5 last night I decided I'm just going to pass. The EX5 is attractive in the same way that the Fusion is, in blending the synth engines. But the lack of horsepower on the EX5 is what is making me give it up. Only two voices in the AN section kills it for me. As a ROMpler it is probably too big and cumbersome.

I can see how the FDSP engine would be very tempting for ambient work though. It's been said that it sounds superb. I just don't think I would have much use for it.

So. Anyone has any thoughts on this synth that cost like 4 thousand dollars back in 1999 (which would be $5,553.83 in 2012 dollars)?

I'm into the 90's stuff from that era and yes, this is one i'd like to have. Don't know much about it though and it's limitations don't matter much to me.

you were more looking at it as a workstation though? I think that once you get into multitimbral modes and other things, you more or less have to decided what you can and can't live without. I've never been a fan of using romplers like that though, to me over all it seems like that there's too many negatives. but using Live, it makes it easy to synch the BPM, record loop, play something else rinse, repeat.

Well I was going to check out the sequencer but basically I wanted it as a sound design tool. But 2 AN voices is what killed it for me.

I don't like the 90s Yamaha ROM-based synth sounds. CS1X, CS2X, CS6X (without AN card) just don't do it for me.

I had a cs6x. wouldnt mind another one either. I think that era romplers are my weak spot. I like them a smidge and a hair more than the hybrid synths.

guess we all have to have one

So you were interested more in it's workstation-ness than it's rompler-ness, Metro?

For S+S the FDSP engine seems to be VERY interesting.

For ambient, even with the underpowered machine, you might still get to do a bunch of AWM2 and FDSP parts, plus an occasional VL or AN sound, with the sequencer, and just have fun that way. If I were an ambient guy, I think I'd go for it.

My attention's been diverted elsewhere in the meantime.

if its the same synth i'm thinking of i've heard it makes excellent sax sounds also i though it was much more expensive on the used market like $1000+

then again that was prolly 5 years ago when i was looking at them. most yamaha synths like the dx7II and after sound really pristine to me.

i like the tg77 and fs1r but they're a little too clean for me. i imagine the ex5 is similar in hygiene
