DIY 1U Utility Panel

Dumpster dividend! A V.34 dial-up modem! Zoom, baby!

You see a doorstop, but I see a nice aluminum project box that would cost $50 @ Raxxess. Here's what I've got in mind:

That box, minus it's current innards, plus this $10 pre-punched front:

equals this Handy Re-Configurable Utility Panel™:

I think it will tidy things up in my studio quite nicely. I currently have no handy way to plug mics into my preamp,
and switched power strips are scattered about here and there... I hate that.

I think I'll only put four XLR jacks (even though I only have two good mics), four switches, and for now,
blank the rest of the holes with these 80¢ patcheroonies:

Suggestions please. What else would you put in it? I don't need 1/4" or midi jacks. I don't want to use Neutrik Combination jacks, because the main things I'm after are: stop using TSR mic cables so I can quit worrying about shorting the phantom power from my preamp, and grouping all my power switches into one place.

I have a rule of avoiding patch bays so I wouldn't know what to suggest :)

And yeah, project rack enclosures are expensive! Nice find, Plinkers! Maybe some MIDI connectors? I dunno. :idk:

LOL I'm totally gonna put a Bat-Logo on it.

I already have a Midispork 8X8 rack thingy with handy front midi jax, but thanx for the suggestion. The nice thing about this idea is: I could add that later, if I wanted.

I think Metro once said he wished for a midi patchbay, but those midi pass-through connectors are expensive. With a box like this, one could get the much cheaper panel mount solder lug type jacks and just wire them front to back. That's what I'm going to do with the XLRs.

I assume then you need to match the faceplate the connector you want?

That should work for me, since I only want XLR and some round rocker switches that I know will fit in XLR holes. 5 pin DIN jax are a bit smaller, though. If you're in no hurry, I'll check all that out when I order the stuff to make mine. Last night I tried to find all the dwgs involved, but the bastids kept me too busy.

That also assumes that you don't want to drill your own holes, or you don't have a drill press with big honking bits. I have, but drilling and sweeping up after 12 big honking holes isn't worth $13 to me. Especially considering you have to drill the little side holes too, and get them in just the right place.

I put four of the rear receptacles on individual switches so I don't have to walk around behind my stuff to turn things on and off. Gonna save me twelve or fifteen steps a week!

And besides, you can't have too many lighted switches.

Niiiiiiice!

But I don't think that drill bit is big enough. Holy cow. You know, every time I've tried to drill a mondo hole in sheet metal, I wound up with a triangular hole. How did you keep that from happening?

Drill press, clamp your work, do not use triangular bits. And it was aluminuminum, which works easier than steel. Drilling Big Honking Holes™ in steel is best with cutting oil, slow drilling speed, and is a pita.
