Non-musical artifarts

Here be the thread to discuss non-harmonic handiwork.

Image

Here’s one of my brain farts that actually made it to tangibility. It’s a reverse engineered SteadyCam JR. A partial parts list: 18” of ½” EMT thin wall conduit, a ¼” X ¾” bar of aluminum, a piece of alum. “U” channel, a bicycle grip with a wooden dowel shoved into it, and the super secret gizmo that makes it work, which is a nylon/ball bearing “transfer ball” of the type used in material transfer tables. Got this one from McMaster Carr for $5.

Image

I tapped a threaded hole in the nylon ball & attached the handle grip to it with a threaded rod. I ‘milled’ the slots in the top channel with a cheap bench top drill press and an equally cheap X Y drill press vice. (I did pop for a couple of actual end mill bits.)

Image

I didn’t bother with buffing out scratches or trying to make it pretty. For years, I’ve planned to get started with anodizing. Instead, I think I’ll put an old oven in the garage and try powder coating. Much less nasty chemo. And I’ve already got an old oven.
I balance it with a few washers attached to the bottom of the ‘spar’, and ‘center’ it by sliding the camera fwd/back/side to side on the mounting plate. Theory: it works by moving the center of gravity out of the inside of the camera, placing it just below the center of the nylon ball. It reduces camera shake in moving shots dramatically. The wide angle lens helps, too.

Image

It doesn’t look like it would do much of anything, but the results are amazing. Somewhere, in a stack of DV tapes, I have some test footage where I ran around with it through hallways and up and down stairs. The video looks like you’re in a little airplane flying through the building. I’ll post it, if it turns up…

Next: one of these days, I’ll exhibit my homemade 20’ jib crane with remote tilt/pan head.

That is excellent, Plink! Very crafty stuff there.

Let's see, do I have that photo... where did I leave it... ah, here it is:

Image

I made this mantlepiece. It started out as a dozen lyptus boards and a sketch. It took me far longer to finish this project than it should have, though. I'm so easily distracted, and I like to "age" my projects.

You can't tell from the photo, but the left column is actually a door that swings open to reveal the gas valve and a small bit of storage, where I keep a fireplace lighter and the windup key for that clock.

Thanks, Bern! I am rather pleased with myself on that one.

I mentioned elsewhere that I'm working on building a proper woodworking bench, so once it starts coming together perhaps I'll remember to take some photos and post progress, for the lolz.

After that will be a china cabinet, as per request from the missus.

That's a bleepin Masterpiece! I have a lumpy throat. I haven't seen such a fine example of one of those since the last time I saw a really really good one! Well done!

EP: Excellent workage of wood!

But, instead of hanging stockings on the mantle, it's the christmas custom at Maison du chiot to expect Santa to fill the yule shot glasses? Please seek therapy, my friend...

That thread already has my interest. :thu:

I have to confess to owning two lathes and two milling machines

So, you machinicate on some level? Or yer just an extreme hobbyist? That's not unlikely in this crowd.

Thanks for the kind sentiments, all.

There's no telling all the things I've done in the last few years as a result of them being in the honey-do list and us not being able to afford hiring someone who knows what they're doing

Somehow they've turned out ok.

Only thing I can't do is paint our walls, we always have to hire someone because I get allergies from the paint.

My wife has informed me that she will not tollerate painting anymore, and that we'll be hiring that out if we do it again. I'm kinda like, "yeah, OK, then I don't have to do it," but then I'm also, "awww man that's gonna cost me..."

I hate painting. Absolutely loath it. I'll do anything else. Well, not roofing. I hate that, too. Anything else I'll cheerfully tackle. Wait, wallpapering. Never, ever, will I wallpaper.

My time is much better spent as an inventator:

Hmm, how can I get the solar cover off the kidz pool by myself without wadding it up on the ground
thereby coating it with grass clippings & yard mines? Preferably using junk already lying around?

Since I'm already outside with the camera, here's some other stuff I've caused to come into existence:

The deck is almost all from scrap. I should paint it, but I hate painting!
Image

The porch I planned & built with a couple helpers. I had the stoop poured when the house was built.
Image

Boondocks! I haz them!
Image

I designed the garage, except for the roof/attic trusses.
The truss bindery designs them free to your specs.
I could finish the 800+ sq ft room upstairs if I ever wanted...

Yes, it's a Park Ave. And a minivan. And a pickup.
Inside is a golf cart with utility bed. And a tractor.

well, you could always start turning sonic screw drivers

wow i wish we had boondocks like that down here. There is no "country" down here.. but that's what I liked about Syracuse so much, there was a different type of environment 15 mins in each direction.

My wife has informed me that she will not tollerate painting anymore

you must have messed up, we want pics

You can make a mantle, but you mess up painting

Plink, where do you live? It seems like there's no other humans within eyesight :thu:

Are you a farmer?

Oh man, I miss living in the boondocks. I think when I retire, I'm gonna go find some mountain-style boondocks and just hang out in the peace and quiet. Which I'll then proceed to destroy with 10000 watts of BEEEEEOOOWOOOWWOWOWWWWWOOWOOWOOOOOOOOOOOO from my synths! lol.

That's a clever cover contraption, Plink, good work sir, good work. :thu:

And, no, I didn't mess up the painting, it's just that... well, I like to age my projects, and painting counts as a project so... You can extrapolate from there.
