Here's an off hand question I had in the back of my head.

If I get a USB mixer, say it's a 6 input mixer. Do I get six line ins into my DAW or just the master out? What's the sort of standard with that kind of thing?

Thanks.

I think it depends on the mixer...

The Yamaha N8 and N12 is great at this, but probably a bit on the expensive side...

ya most 'USB mixers' are only stereo

sometimes it's the main 2 bus output (usb input) sometimes it's a separate or assignable. some of those also have 2 channels of USB output so you can route audio from the daw to external effects and whatnot.

the Yamaha, mackie and Allen & Heath (r-16 & gs 24) have full analog to USB channels (in and out). you'd have to look into the specific mixer

usually it will say like '18 da/ad converters' which on a 16 channel mixer does quite cover all the busses, channels and main 2 bus. normally there's software where you can assign what goes where but it may be hard-wired

some digital mixers also have USB outputs like the presonus or older ones have adat or spdif and other digital connections that may need channels assigned to them (like a bus), I/o cards, or can do all the channels

ok so here's a little update

i got a mac g4 and the oasys pci card

the g4 is a 'quick silver' dual 800mhz, 1.5g ram, 80g hhd, mx2 video. the fan is a little loud so i'll prolly only turn it on when i want to run the oasys.

it boots into osx 10.4 (tiger) so i'm gonna try to set it up to dual boot in 9.2.2 or 10.4 on start up. then in theory i could run logic 8 on the tiger side but i image it would be pretty limited lol

plus i have a roland v-synth gt on the way

my brother picked it up in ottawa after i sent him the ca$h and its currently shipping here with an eta of like 2-3 days.

Isn't there more than one? The one that's not in the power supply should be pretty easy to replace. And the one that is in the PS shouldn't be impossible.

Oh and YAY for new toys!

well if it makes u feel better s.i I'm being seriously out-geeked by the Mac g4

It came with Mac os 10.4 (tiger) which runs extremely slow and even something simple like loading os 9.2.2 (for the oasys pci card) is a major uphill battle

this is why I consider the turn of the millennium daw a separate hobby

so far I have a stack of like 10 CDs that won't work and now it seems like the g4 won't boot into tiger anymore

definitely not for the faint of heart lol :samsh:

Yeah... I had xactly these same thoughts when you started talking about it. That thing's not like, say, a Mini or 2600, of which you can un-solder the parts with a hot nail if needed. When all that SMD stuff starts crapping out, it's just ugly.

But anyway, have you:

Checked the power supply volties? A scope is best, so you can see ripple. 13 y.o. filter caps, you know...

Tried another HDD? There's only so many spins in one of those.

Wiggle and re-seated all teh plugs?

And, you could always just put new gutz in the case. Yeah, not really pureistic, but I think those boxes are pretty nice looking.

yes the approach is unsubtly called shoe horn. You know very now and then I get pangs to want to track down old sound blaster 16 sound cards

If I haven't mentioned it though, I thought I did, Waves' new Element synth is really cool.

So I just sold my tube microphone. I go to this guy's studio which is within a reasonable distance, or so I thought.

Anyway, I get there and this one guy lets me in, he's outside having a smoke. The guy who works in the studio B will buy my mic, but I talk to the Studio A guy fora few minutes, he asks questions, I answer and ask for comments on his stuff. So studio B guy gets there and we go test the mic at the room where Usher is currently recording (but he wasn't in the studio at the time). There's a hip hop kid listening to his mix in the main room, he's probably 14yo and full of attitude. He was like, "where's my 808 samples go???" and studio A guy's answer is "man, there's a hundred something tracks in this thing, they're layered in there somewhere." Of course to me it sounds like simple hip hop which you could do with a 16 track sequencer, but what do I know.

This is all in Atlantic City, which is as upscale as in-town Atlanta gets. Both guys are very passionate about what they do and they have some very nice stuff in very nice rooms, but they're definitely not gearslutz.

That was my lunch-hour adventure. Now I need to get me a new cheaper microphone so that I'll be able to afford the FMR preamp and compressor.

Which is more than there is here. What's "here" you ask? A big pile of nothing.

Makes you wonder if someone like that would be able to do anything if they were limited to a 4-track.

No, they wouldn't. Call it a hunch. I used a Yammie 4-track cassette recorder for years. Some of my best creations were done on that thing. Of course, I re-recorded and sparkled them all up on my DAW, but still.
