That's pretty cool because it not only supports DLNA boxes but it also supports those relatively cheap Roku devices... which seem to get better reviews than other things like the Boxee boxes that I was looking at.

Personal update: i7 / new mobo /32Gb is running quite nicely. The bad news is that it didn't clear up the intermittent probs I've been having with my MOTU 828 mk1 interface. I was hoping the trbl was in the old puter, but nope. I really like it when it's working, so I think I'll just send it in to motu for fixxorage.

But my little Edirol UA-4FX 2X2 usb interface runs just fine. It did before, but a little slower in the latency department.

lol my Windows Experience Index is still 3.2 because I need a better GPU card. But I knew that.

You're making my Core 2 Duo with 3GB sound a little dated.

Well, we know what to do about that, don't we?

But really, there's no reason what you have shouldn't work fine for you: you don't run gobs of softies all at once, you have a great interface, and you don't edit HD video. The vid part is the main reason I'm upping.

What kind of videos are you going to work on? Personal stuff, or are you going pro?

Like... how serious? Is it Super Serious(tm)? Like, on a scale of "birthday videos" to "JJ Abrams", what are we talking here?

I just fart around with it. In the past I've done a few projects for a local charity/service type club. I've also done two wedding photo/video packages, but never ever ever ever ever again.

Never.

I forgot to say that my son may make a career out of media of some sort, so he will benefit from enhanced vid power.

That is, if I let him live.

So, while we're on the subject of video making, I've often toyed around with the idea of making music videos to go along with some of my original work. Nothing serious, obviously, just for my own personal lulz. I know nothing of video editing (especially sync'ing up vid and music). For something TOTALLY NOT PRO OMG would iMovie do this? Or is this something that can be done in Cubase (5) even?

I've not tried anything but Premiere Pro, but people are making really good stuff with iMovie.

Garage Band, too.

I want to do that too. I think it'd be a really cool way to bring together several hobbies. I use Sony Vegas

Yea, I've noticed.. AND the iPad version is cheap ($4.99, I think). I mean, for what I want to do, I think it would probably work. Again, nothing even close to Pro, just for lulz.

That's good too, I hear.

An acquaintance of mine has a really good Sony ENG camera, but another guy used to edit all his stuff. Now they are no longer friends, and he asked me to do it. I pleaded "sorry, no time", but I got him Sony Vegas Platinum Something-or-other when it was on sale for $0 after competitive rebates. I just sent in one of my old proofs of purchase for Premiere Pro.

I fear he isn't going to achieve much acumen in the editing department, however, judging from some of the questions he's asked: "Why should I actually buy a big green screen? With this software, I should be able to just add the green background digitally, rite?" "Just how hot does the firewire get?"

I think I begin to see why the other guy severed relations with him.

So, Saturday morn I fire up the Studio-puter, only to find it unwilling to boot!
After some shooting of the trouble, I'm sure it's Ye Olde HDD.

So, new SDD day! (This thing is scary fast).

Image

Question: is there any reason why VSTs have to be on the OS drive? That's where SONAR puts them by default,
but wouldn't they work just as well on my 2TB second drive (assuming it's fast enough)? I've had no trouble with
sample based synths when installed that way.
