So does this mean there will be more music-making and less music-wishing in the near future?

I keed. (mostly.) :poke:

Music wishing is pretty much all I've done this year.

We'll see about the music making... that's all up in the year still...

Here's what people should be doing: people should be developing a big multi-touch screen flat panel display that I can lay on my desk that will interface with my DAW like a big mixing console and control all the wigets in my softsynths with virtual sliders and buttons.

Instead of making it work with interactive bar ads.

So, I got it. It's got 16Gb RAM, not 8.

I'm looking at external drives now. 750Gb for 85 bucks or 1.5Tb for 119? I wonder if I really need 1.5Tb. I'm not planning on getting Komplete or Omnisphere just yet...

 oh that liar! yea I'm really crying for you here

Are you planning on running samples from the external? you need a good speed then, that should go without saying, but i just wanted to warn you my experiences with externals have been lousy. I think, for some reason, they figure it's for off loading and storage, so they put in the slowest drives they can.

it may also be easier just to get an enclosure and then pick the drive you want separate. just my two cents.

I'm looking at that right now.

The older externals usually say they're 5400. The newer ones (USB 3) don't state the speed anywhere.

What do you recommend?

if you can deal with a little less than a terrabyte, this is what I plan on getting..

http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Momentus- ... 39&sr=1-15

I think I may swap out the internal and the buy a cheap enclosure and use the factory for a storage, it's 320 gig..

Yeah but that's internal. I have a full SSD as internal, thank you very much

So, in my research I came across this. It says the fastest external hard drive through a USB 2.0 port is the Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Ultra (why do they make such long names?...)
The 1TB is going for 99 bucks and the 1.5 for 139. I think 1Tb will be enough.

Eventually I'll have to get a Thunderbolt HD for my projects, once the Thunderbolt HDs go down in price. I do have a Thunderbolt port, so nyah nyah nyah. But right now I'm not going to pay 500 bucks for a HD.

yea but you get an enclosure like this to go with it:

But won't the slower USB 2.0 protocol null the benefits of having an SSD drive?

As a related question, would 41.9MBps be enough for streaming an entire project off of the external hard drive? How many tracks would I be able to stream, roughly? Anyone would want to take a guess?

well, I guess it was implied you'd want to get a 3.0 USB enclosure if that's what you were after..

Your second question.. i dunno. here's another question though... back at that halloween DJ gig I did, I transferred 4 gigs of MP3s to my internal HDD in under 7 minutes. However, I tried to stream 4 separate MP3s at the same time and it pretty much shut down my whole system..

so when were talking transfer rates, is that one operation at a time ( a bulk dump)? if so, I imagine that if you tried to stream 4 separate operations like with my MP3s. You'd need a higher bandwidth then for transfers since they'd be parallel then wouldn't you?

My guess would be "no". USB 2.0 is pretty darn fast. Besides, what you're REALLY buying with an SSD drive is a near-zero latency between the request (Gimme the data off block #82893) and the actual data (seek seek seek spin, found it, DUMP). USB 2.0 won't interfere with that.

Well then I guess I'll just have to spend some extra moola and get that hybrid drive

Let's see: I think the USb 2.0 clock rate is something like 480 Mbits/sec. Figure approx 10 clocks per byte gives a raw data rate of 48 MBytes/sec, but we haven't accounted for bus management overhead yet, so I'd guess that a CONSERVATIVE raw rate is something on the order of 45 MBytes/sec. That's not too shabby for a ten-year-old bus. The peak rate for USB 1.1 was a hair above 1 (one!) MByte/sec.

What about SATA? Does the macbook have an external SATA port? That would rain all over USB.

I can't find anything on the performance of the SATA to USB 2.0 and how many MBps I would get out of that.
