You need to find the biggest sausages you can buy, put them on the bbq and call them 'bad boys'.

Guys always do that.

Huh. You know, I expected that it would be a LOT bigger than a beer can. Maybe if you used a banana instead...?

Meat Missile. More like Darth Smoker, amirite? Or maybe The Uncomfortably-Sized Protein Preparation Unit?

Meaty McMeatyface?

My first attempt. I seems to be a success. It's 2" rockwool 60 in a 1x2 frame with burlap stapled on. I'm wondering if the burlap will darken the studio too much, but it was on clearance at a buck a yard. I cut the wood for about a half dozen and didn't intend to start making them yet, but I started to wonder if it would work/fit so I made one.

Nice. I'm looking forward to how you think they perform.

I'm trying to think up some tests I can do before and aft, hoping to at least be able to visually document the results. I might try a sine sweep from 20-20k with reference mics at the listening position. I'm planning to put bookcases on the rear wall along with one of these in the center of it. Also a couple clouds and some on the sides of the listening area.

In a previous casa, I had book cases filled with books on either side of my desk. It was surprising to me how effective they were at killing slapback, even though there was nary a soft squishy thing in them. I attributed it to the unevenness of the books' spines as diffusers.

Try this freeware. I've been meaning to for five or ten years...

Nice werk, btw. Where'd you get the rockwool? Did they have jazzwool?

nice clav

i built a bunch of sound treatment and am now a convert

the thin 2” stuff would limit the amount of bass energy that can be captured. i like using my 2-3” ones for deadening vocal takes.

if you’re worried about the stereo image of your leslie than capturing mid and high frequencies will work with thinner bass traps afaik.

when it comes time to mix sub bass-heavy music then i needed to add heavy duty bass traps in the corners i got from kijiji. those really made a difference in clearing up the low end.

One option for bass traps in the corner is to cut the 2x4 sheet into 2x2s, then bisect in and X making a total of eight triangles, and then stack them floor to ceiling. Unfortunately that would use up almost an entire $50 six pack of them.

I will probably put something in the corners of the live room, but most of my material is going into my control room this time around.

Also, I only mic one of the Leslies and it's got to be mono. I absolutely hate the sound of a stereo pair on a Leslie. It's not how we hear them in real life. When I use two, they turn at different positions so it's stereo, but not egual.

And plinky, I got it from a place in southern Illinois about 100 miles from me so I had to pay a third in shipping. Ats acoustic or something

But...but... Mr. Nother! If you're in a small enough room with the Leslie, you can hear the sound moving around and bouncing off different walls. Yeah, if you just pipe the stereo from a Les simulator straight into the L & R inputs of your mix, that's pretty cheesy sounding, like some of those "space expando" presets for mastering software.

So I say: for jazz, lots of stereo, cause, for instance, if I'm ever lucky enough to hear Joey Defrancesco in a little club, Ima stick my head right inside that mutha. I guess for rock/R&B, less sep is ok.

But using just one miek seems like watching IMAX through a keyhole.

Or whutevs, cause I totally think yer recordings sound great.

U mad?

Finally got my shit together to get this wall hanging I picked up a while back mounted and hung in the studio... a bit cliched I know lol but you cannot beat a good Yama:

Image

Rarely buy direct from China but figured I'd risk it for £15, would have cost a lot more to have it professionally framed for that size so I found this awful print in a charity shop that was on an open wooden frame thingy about the right size and removed it, backed the frame with fabric then stuck this on.

My piss poor mounting skills are not helped by the wall hanging not being a perfect rectangle

It's on fabric so hopefull I've got it high enough and inconveniently positioned enough that the kitties don't get to it. I actually have 3, not just Eugene, only he is the high maintenance one and my main man in the studio lol so you hear about him a lot more.
