:idk: some dude in FLA. It was a roundabout transaction to say the least. I never knew the buyer, there was a pair of proxies involved.

Ahh. Too bad you couldn't keep it. That was always one of my 'dream' synths. Along with Arp 2500 & 2600.

2600. yes.

so the bass player in my band has friend that he jammed with back in the day. this friend bought a new 2600 but never got into synth stuff so put it in his closet after about a month.

yes. it is still there.

sadly he has recently decided to give it to his son. a 21 yr old who has never played a note in his life and has zero interest in being a musician.

yes, i asked if i could have it.

no, i can't.

 Me wow. Well, kids make you do weird stuff.

Here's whatcha do: Make sure the kid knows you'll buy it when he gets tired of it and needs to make some car payments. Offer to teach him to play 'chords' on it. Then, say "Well shit! It's a duff kit! But I'll still give you $2000 and this cool Squire Strat for it! Chix don't dig synth players, anyway."

well there's no way the 2600 is going to work at this point without a bunch of work.

wait until the kid figures out that he's fried it, and then buy it cheap.

So, what are some of the probs it could have? If it was stored in an unconditioned space, I could see it having crusty sliders/key contacts. In a closet, they might not be too bad? 'Lytics would be dry. What esle?

No matter, though. I'll fix.

well for example _all_ of the jacks will probably need to be replaced because that's something every 2600 needs because of age.

there are so many normalised connections on that thing that the condition of the jacks becomes very important.

ARP also used tantalum capacitors wherever they could, because they were assholes and did all sorts of "clever" engineering things that were extremely bad ideas. taking an ARP and just plugging it in without first opening it up and determining wether this is a good idea or not is an incredibly dangerous thing to do and quite frankly if you ever get upset because that Axxe you got at a yard sale started smoking the minute you turned it on then you won't get any sympathy from me after you read this paragraph.

(note to self: expect no sympathy from S&TG if I ever smoke an ARP).

Indeed, I have absolutely no expectations of this particular synth being in any condition to use, but that is never the point for me.

Of all the components needed to restore any ARP, none will do shit without the shell. IOW, as SEtTG said, get your ARP first, fix it next, call me up in 8 months when you about remember us all.

On another note, SEtTG and I have spoken for around two hundred and fifty six Viet Cong captives... uh, I mean HOURS about my desire to pwn two ARP 2600s (one in the studio, and one on the kitchen counter <---wouldn't that be sweet?!) He generally thinks I'm a mo, but I think they are teh great.

He thinks I should get an STG SL system, and I think I should get an STG SL system and two 2600s. :idk:
